Programme Elements

Tramping and Sea-kayaking:
This is a multi day programme involving a four or five-day tramp selected from one of New Zealand’s great walks
e.g. Heaphy Track, Wangapeka, Nelson Lakes,
followed by three days sea-kayaking in the picturesque Abel Tasman National Park.

Rock climbing:
Several day instructional sessions using indoor climbing walls,
followed by climbing on natural rock at Rapaki and Castle Hill.

White Water Kayaking:
Extensive instruction is provided using the pools, video analysis, the local rivers (Waimakariri and Ashley),
followed by a four day residential expedition to the Hanmer Springs area using the Waiau and Clarence rivers.
For students who up-skill sufficiently an opportunity is provided to paddle the grade 3, Maori Gully, section of the Hurunui River.

Junior School Camp Leadership: (Year 9 Peel Forest)
This week long residential experience is situated near Geraldine and involves skills of rafting, high-ropes, orienteering, day tramping, meal cooking, basic camping and camp craft along with the development of social skills.  Outdoor Management students can attend these courses as student leaders participating in the activities with the younger children.

 Mountainbiking:
This programme develops biking skills at Bottle Lake Forest, Hanmer Springs and the Wharfedale area surrounding Oxford. Challenging and interesting riding is presented.

 Multi Activity Programme:
This four-day programme is based at Hanmer Springs.
It includes mountainbiking, rock climbing, tramping, camping and kayaking all at a non technical level and uses these mediums in the development of leadership and risk management skills.

Tramping:

  1. A three-day training tramp in the Arthur’s Pass National Park to prepare and develop skills for a client based tramp.
Each student then prepares and leads a tramp for a small group of selected clients.
This includes pre-trip information, safety management, food and menus, decision-making on the tramp and care for the clients.
  2. A client based trip to a different area in Arthur’s Pass National Park (also of three days) where students lead their clients.

Adventure Based Learning:
This programme of inter-personal skills makes use of the facilities at Oxford Area School and Brighton Ropes Course
where high ropes skills of confidence, teamwork and belaying are developed.
Senior students are then involved in the construction of a Ropes Course at Oxford Area School
and leadership / instruction skills with children from the attached primary school.
