Mix of Town and Country

TOWN

The city of Christchurch with its International Airport is only 40 minutes drive away and classes regularly travel there to use the facilities of a large city such as extensive libraries, theatres, museums and recreational facilities.

WELL-EQUIPED CLASSROOMS

Our classrooms are as pleasant and well-equiped as any city school.  Year 1-6 are fortunate to have access to equipment and facilities in the Year 7-13 area.  Our specialist areas include a Library, Music Room, Food Technology Room, Art Room which includes a dark room for developing, Workshop & Graphics Rooms, Science Laboratoratories, a General Purpose Hall/Gymnasium, 3 Computer Labs and an Observatory.  Interactive whiteboards and video conferencing facilities are also features in the school.

SAFETY

Whilst enjoying most of the advantages of city life, our students have the safety and security of a supportive rural community for their base.

Town & CountryCOUNTRY

This community and the geographic location of the school offer many opportunities for a diverse range of experiences that many city schools cannot offer.  The mountains, rivers and bush are within easy reach for outdoor activities and for the field trips that are an integral part of so many subjects.

COMMUNITY CULTURAL AND SPORTING GROUPS

There are a variety of sporting and cultural groups operating in the Oxford district.  These include:

  • Adult Education classes (at school in the evening)
  • Ballet
  • Rugby
  • Tennis
  • Soccer
  • Netball
  • Cricket
  • Scouts/Brownies
  • Karate
  • Pilates
  • Commumity Youth Groups

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

A comprehensive Outdoor Education programme provides unique experiences for our students.
Years 4-6 classes often have camps and outdoor trips.
Years 7 & 8 classes have a 3 day camp each year. Alternating between a water skills based experience and a tramping/outdoor skills based camp.
Year 9 classes experience a week in a mountain environment with tramping, river rafting, ropes courses, confidence building and team work activities.
Year 10 students have a snow experience each year with snow skills including snow boarding and/or skiing.
Leadership skills are developed through courses in extensive courses in outdoor education at Years 12 and 13. These courses are fully fledged subjects and offer achievement credits and unit standards on the NCEA framework. These courses take students out into the mountains and rivers in the top half of the South Island and offer extensive leadership training.
